Artist's Description

A pair of glasses rests on an old desk at Discovery Harbour in Penetanguishene, Ontario, a historic site that tells the story of early naval and military history in Upper Canada.

The scene is part of the reconstructed buildings at the site, showcasing the simple yet elegant furnishings of the 19th century naval and military community. The aged texture of the desk, combined with the peaceful setting, transports us back in time to a world where taking a moment to pause and reflect was a way of life.

Discovery Harbour was originally established in 1793 when Sir John Graves Simcoe scouted Penetanguishene Bay as a strategic site for a naval base. The steep-sided, deep water bay would be an ideal spot to protect and maintain ships. The bay could also serve as a vital transport link from York (Toronto) to the northwest. Today, it serves as a museum that brings to life the stories of the people who lived and worked there, including sailors, soldiers, and their families. It's a p...
